Are you sick of your PDA running out of batteries and erasing your entire yearly schedule because you are simply too busy to hot sync it, or whatever they call it nowadays? Are you saddened by the ruining of your cell phone and iPod and PDA through the repeated dropping of them in to puddles and toilets? Do you feel like a big dork wielding too many electronic toys in public? Well, if so, then welcome to my world. Thanks heavens, Merlin has fixed all of this for me. He’s given me permission to go back to the basics. Back to a system librarians and English teachers everywhere applaud. The Hipster PDA. Join this wildly popular trend (at least at my house) and you will only expend about $5 bucks for a fail proof system of getting your shit together. And I think this is actually serious too. What you need is a stack of index cards and a brain.
When I say wildly popular at my house, I am stretching the truth a bit. What I mean is, index cards are wildly popular, if not the actual tiering of information. At the local paper supply sales at Target, I happened upon a lot of 25 cent index card packets, and thought they might come in handy for spontaneous flash card making fun, or miniature art projects, or clandestine notetaking, I dunno. I went a bit wild and bought 4 or 5 and so I put a stack on each kids’ desk. For the past week, index love has kicked in full force. Every day, I am treated to a sight like this, my personal favorite:
Or this small sampling:
True, sometimes sticky notes creep in to the picture. But there was an actual mini tomato on the circle on the bottom of the tomato card. Both kids have caught the passion therefore I get many from a little boy that say boo and love, since that is the entire repertoire of words he can spell other than our names.
This weekend, I woke up tired and grumpy. We all seem to be going through a new and improved stomach virus. Plus, Ken had work to do from home and I had lots of studying to do for a class I’m taking. I got snippy with everyone and they snipped back. While we were all stewing, Li suggested we each write an index card for one another. That is where the “I sorry I fight with you” comes from. The moral of the post is; index cards for better living.

What a coincidence - just last week I started carrying around a hipster PDA of my own despite Sage’s ridicule. Add a few post-it flags and you can organize it by section too. Now I only need to find something that will actually make me do the things I’ve written on it.

My favorite feature of the real PDA is the alarm, even though I never hear it. It is supposed to remind me to do those things in the PDA. My aunt swears it is the best tool for us ADD types. So, what is the hipster PDA equivalent of the alarm?

I have never liked PDA’s, I like good old fashioned paper and pencil. My brother thinks I am insane. Most of the stuff’s not gonna get done anyway.

My son loves index cards and post-its too. I got a big batch some time ago and we all use them now for little notes. For the person who talked about the alarm for the PDA, when I need an alarm I usually use an electronic timer or the alarm clock in the bedroom. Of course, you may be where you can’t use those things, people with different jobs or lots of appointments may be out a lot, but at those times I’ve found a watch helps me keep track of time. Mine doesn’t have an alarm but my dh’s does. Since I do tend to lose track of time easily these things help me stay on track when needed.

Yep, index card fans here too. Didn’t you see the holder i made for Emma’s?
I also hear dof a good idea with sticky notes and a file folder. Write one to-do on each sticky note, place them on one half of the file folder. When you do an item, tranfer it to the other side of the file folder.
As for the alarm, some days I think i need a swift kick in the rear / smack upside the head to get me to remember some stuff.

For the alarm, you may be shocked to know that your Nokia phone has a calandar & alarm feature. And you usually have the phone with you.

Love the index card notes. My son likes to write ones with “Boo!” too. Any time of year. Very sweet.
I wrote a post about tween books over at Chicken Spaghetti if you want to check it out. (Thanks for the idea.)

That is great. My husband will love it. My kids, well they just wish I would get with the times. LOL

“I love you … and food” is the most adorable thing I’ve seen all week.
