Hail to the pencil

Today Diane at Clickschooling has linked to this noteworthy project. For National Handwriting Day the fine folks at Handwriting Without Tears have sponsored at Mail to the Chief celebration where kids can write to the new president.

My kids have used HWT for years and enjoyed the process of learning to write holding a utensil of some sort rather than pounding the keyboard all of the time. At times I have felt as if we were learning some esoteric skill, like falconry.

Seriously though, handwriting comes in handy now and then, when the internet is down for example, or when your mom makes you write a thank you note, or when you need to write a grocery list and can’t find the cell phone to text the list to yourself.  The good people at HWT have a lot to say about it helping people to organize their thoughts and align chakras and get creative. Maybe you should go there because I might be getting confused. Suffice it to say, my kids have learned how to hold a pencil and often enjoy it and I am proud that they will use one to write their thoughts to the next commander-in-chief. I bet there will be a lot in their letter about how cool it was to hear the crowd roar when his victory was announced. Maybe they’ll remind him to keep his promises. One thing is for sure, they won’t let me blog the letter here so you’ll just have to go sign your own kids up to see how cute things might get.

Hey, I just got HWT for my kids. I’m hoping to help my very aesthetically minded younger child convert her hieroglyphics into a thing of beauty which she so craves. As to my older one? Maybe if I put it in terms of falconry, he’ll buy it…?

That’s interesting. I wonder if the beginning HWT is more appealing to students than the later HWT training. Other than the difference in the lines, I’m not sure I understand why this program is so popular!
