Punk was born in ‘77!

Overheard amongst the teen population at a certain birthday gathering last night, “I wish I was born in ‘77, because that’s when punk was born!”

Although there is no official birthday of punk, the kid was not exactly off the mark. I wanted to be amused that these dear 12 and 13-year-olds were embracing the punk culture, and I wanted to smuggly snort and expound on how much closer my generation was to the heart of punk. But as I was firmly chewing my tongue off so as not to embarrass anyone with my DNA, it dawned on me that while punk was being birthed by invasive c-section in 1977 (or so) I was about the same age these kids before me were at now. And I’m pretty sure I wasn’t in the original line up of Warsaw. So yeah, I wished I was there too when it all began instead of sitting in my room listening to Dr. Demento on the radio while playing with my Star Wars action figures.

I like the “or so” qualification on the 1977 date. I’m afraid for me it would have to be “precisely”.

i can relate. i feel an attachment of sort knowing i was born when Speed Racer was “born” into animation– thank you Trans-Luxe.

as for that young punk feeling, my 18″ hawk is now gone, but i can settle well enough into a little SexPistols or Iggy Pop with my kiddos on Guitar Hero. i just hafta be careful not to slam the controller when i’m through…

The problem I’m having right now is that my daughter (11) is becoming more musically savvy than I am. I used to introduce her to music, she now introduces ME to music. This is depressing my husband and I as we seem terribly uncool, but my husband remembers the birth of punk (altho not technically THERE) and I remember the birth of techno pop…so hey…we have a cool factor. If they could only tap into that, our kids….

While I’d like to say I rocked to punk in 1977, that I was being rocked to John Denver is probably closer to the truth. I do remember as a high school student feeling so cool listening to the likes of Led Zeppelin, Queen, and Steve Miller Band. For me it was most certainly a feeling of being connected to the past and possessing a deeper musical knowledge than the masses. There’s something to enjoying great music while also feeling privvy to lesser known bands.
